well, something I've realised these past weeks is that when it comes to drawing, beeing able too see things as what they are is very handy. studying and sketchin/drawing still-life objects improve you way of seeing things, as well as when it comes to shading. if sketching/drawing with grey tones (normal pencils) it's important to know what part is the darkest and what's the ligthest. By using different shades you get the feeling that there's more colour in the drawing.

Then you can try using different pencils and different kind of strokes. using a softer pen for darker areas and smudge the lines (or fill the area, but don't forget reflections! if the area should be of such that It may reflect light). with a harder pen you can fill the lighter areas with crossed strokes or just diogianlly strokes. the choices are endless ^^

then a thing I've learned recently that makes very detailed drawings easier, when drawing a pretty detailed motive you don't have to make all the details, for example a field of grass, you don't have to draw each straw of grass, that'd be a complete mess xD but you only keep some parts detailed. if a part of the field has detailed grass then the brain will fill in the rest of the field since it knows how it should look ^^

woo... gosh I wrote much xD is there something more I can tell... oh, yeah, when I sketch I usually use a hard pencil since it's easier to erase and aint that visible. meaning I don't have to erase the sketch lines when making it a drawing =3 for the drawing I usually don't go under 3B in softness, I work alot with really soft pencils since I like when it's good contrast =3 2H, 3B, 6B and 9B is pretty much all I need.

In the end, it really is all about practising. studying others art is also a way to learn new tecniques.
